20th New Directions in Turkish Film Studies Conference: Migration Film Festival Short Film Competition Kadir Has University, 7-11 May 2019 |
Date and Venue XX. New Directions in Turkish Film Studies Conference on Cinema and Migration will take place between 7-11 May 2019. The Conference will begin with the Migration Film Festival, supported by the Directorate of Migration, Ministry of Interior and Directorate of Cinema, Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Aim Migration is one of the most controversial and pressing issues of our times. Due to economic deprivation, violence, human rights violations, political uncertainty and environmental problems, being on the road to somewhere has become the new norm. Yet in most cases, it is a departure without a certain arrival. According to the statistics of Directorate General of Migration Management and figures of UNHCR, 68.5 million people across the world are forcibly displaced and Turkey ranks first among top refugee-hosting countries. Between 2011-2016, the number of migrants in Turkey has reached 3.5 million. While there are approximately one thousand victims of human trafficking in the last decade, the number of irregular migrants in Turkey is 265.169 in 2018. In such a slippery landscape, the experiences and stories of migrants demand recognition. Interrogating the construction and representation of migrant identities, Migration Film Festival aims to screen short films made on the subject of migration and foster consciousness and awareness on the issue. A creative approach based on profound knowledge that discusses the issue of migration worldwide but especially in Turkey is expected.
